Viva la Vita! (Part 1)
(Anonymous Commission)
A big city, as many others. Hectic people, as we can see all over the world. Among them, a shy young man. But not your ordinary shy male. This one is different from most of young men you may see in life. This one is the luckiest man alive.
After years of being bullied and rejected, Alonzo is having the time of his life. Despite his lack of social skills, he was able to get the perfect job in the perfect company and, the most important thing, he is dating the girl of his dreams. The one he has been having a crush on since junior high. Not that he has met many other people after that, but still, she is an amazing and beautiful girl.
There was nothing to complain about. The efforts he had to go through along the week were paid off on weekends, when he would go out with his beloved.
But the best was yet to come. On a certain day, Alonzo’s boss suddenly got sick and had to be away from work for a month so he could go under a treatment. Unable to take any new projects, the whole department went on vacation. If this is not being lucky, what else would that be?
To celebrate all that, Alonzo and his beloved girlfriend decide go on a trip overseas. Just the two of them. A great chance to be free from all the noise and stress from his city, and to finally get intimate with his lover. After all, he is a young healthy man with a wonderful girlfriend.
She takes care of everything: choosing the place, booking the hotel and buying the plane tickets. Alonzo knows she is good at making choices, and whatever she does will please him.
And in a few hours they are ready to go. The lovey-dovey couple goes hand in hand to the airport and in a blink of an eye they are looking for their seats inside the plane.
But when the doors close, the anxiety kicks in. Alonzo looks to the left and sees himself surrounded by people. Noisy people, crying children and the worst of them all: those extroverted ones who like to make friends with random strangers. Will one of them talk to me? What should I say? What kind of thing they’ll ask me? It’s better look to the other side and avoid eye contact, just in case.
Time to pay attention to the safety speech and demonstrations. He was doing his best to keep a straight face, but the chicken inside him can just pay attention to the words “emergency”, “exit” and “evacuation”.
Enough of safety then, time to look somewhere else. He gets much calmer looking out the window. It is already nighttime and he is able to see the lights of the city. They have their charm when you have some time to appreciate them. But they slowly started moving, or rather, the plane started moving. Soon it would be thousands of feet high in the air, no way of leaving. No escape at that point. Is it too late to run back home?
“Everything ok, honey?”
“O-Of c-course not, baby!” After jumping startled he put on his best smile
“Are you sure? You’re shaking.”
“Oh? Am I?” A pause to try to find a good excuse “Could it be that I’m hungry? Or maybe, I can’t hold back the urge to tell everyone the future mother of my children is the best woman in the world?”
“Oh.. you silly!” She rests her head on his arm and as if by magic, all his worries are gone. How could he have forgotten his muse was right next to him to give all the support he needs? A kiss on her forehead and everything is fine.
“Hey, light of my day...” Just to check if his goddess is awake after a long silence, Alonzo thinks of a silly question. “How long is the flight, by the way?”
“Fourteen hours, I guess…” She replies sleepy.
“Oh! I see…. WHAT?! FOURTEEN HOURS?!”
The girlfriend only looks around showing him how much attention he has just drawn to himself and he blushes.
“Enjoy the flight, bae. Wake me up when they start serving the food.” She kisses his cheek and makes herself comfortable again.
Do it for her, Alonzo. Do it for her. As he thought before, there is no escape. I’d better think of the nice things that will happen afterwards. He has been through a lot. What is a flight compared to all that?

Far from there, and safe on the land, things are not exactly what you would call ordinary. A young female unicorn and two fairies are having a small argument in a mystic shrine.
“Can I go with you this time?” Vita, the young filly, stands by a huge magical tree timidly holding a fairy by her fancy dress.
“Ah, my sweetie. You know the world outside is dangerous for you. We can easily get through human webs because we are tiny, but what would we do if you were caught?” The other one wearing an equally fancy dress caresses Vita’s hair tenderly, being careful not to damage a single lavender curl.
“But, Zaniah, I feel lonely. You always take at least three days to come back! Please, let me go with you!” she insists making an irresistible pleading face trying to convince them.
“No, no, no, young lady. It’s still too soon and you know that.”
“But if you behave, we’ll bring you a new bouncy sphere, what do you say?” the other fairy, Syrma, suggests while releasing her dress from the unicorn’s hand.
“A bouncy sphere!??! Bigger than the last one?? Yaay! I want it!!!! I do want it!!”
“Ah! now I remember, your last bouncy sphere exploded when you tried to hit it with your horn, right?” the fairy called Zaniah mentions mocking her.
“... The chipmunk triplets told me that was the right way to play it...” Vita lowers her big eyes in a mix of shame and regret.
“So, if you promise to be a good girl, we’ll bring you the best bouncy sphere in the world.” You want to repeat “bouncy sphere” as many times as you can to keep Vita interested. Syrma makes sure to say those words looking at Vita deep in the eyes.
“I promise! I promise! Yayy!! Bouncy sphere! Bouncy sphere! Giant! Pretty! Bouncy sphere!” Vita forgets about the fairies completely while hopping around the shrine with uncontrollable happiness.
The two tiny women take advantage on that and disappear from sight secretively. Vita does not even mind their leaving and, after getting tired from jumping so much, she lays down on a flower bed and sleeps soundly, dreaming about her gift.
Something most living beings agree is that the human species can be a threat to the whole world, and among them, the shadow of disgrace is the mankind.
But none of that happened without a reason. Humans were supposed be found everywhere: Deep in the sea or up in the skies, during the daylight or in the darkness, human races are supposed to make sure no creature is unaided.
Unfortunately, what happened was exactly the opposite. Their aggressive nature turned them into merciless hunters, who would not spare even the ones of their own kind.
The only hope for the world, would be to save and protect as many mystical species as possible, among them, unicorns, or last one of them, Vita.
Vita lost her blessing when she was still a newborn. The fairies, aware of the importance of unicorns and other mystical creatures, took her to a safe place and promised to protect her until Vita was ready to fulfill her destiny.
Centuries have passed since then and Vita is now a sweet and happy filly. Her shrine, magically hidden deep in the forest, has everything she may need and fairies are always around her to make sure she is fine.
However, as every young male or female alive, Vita is going through that phase in which being comfortable at home is not enough anymore. She is visited by several animals on a daily basis, but when will she visit them? When will she be able to see all those wonderful views her friends describe or find the fruits they bring?
But she is a good girl after all, she would not disobey the fairies. It is just that the world out there seems so big and interesting. Maybe one day, the fairies will take her for a walk out of the shrine.
Besides, she knows very well it is for her own safety. Fairies explain to her over and over that the world outside the shrine is full of those scary six-eyed and eight-legged monsters with venomous fangs building disgusting sticky traps: humans.
